I do not mean this hyperbolically: sometimes I think that Stefon is the funniest thing that’s every been on SNL.

I agree. Stefon is in my opinion one of the funniest and greatest characters ever created.

Okay, this could be pure delusion on my part. I am well aware that I could be seeing what I want to see. But just read on and judge for yourself:

2003: Arrested Development premieres. I watch the first episode as it airs on FOX, and the only reason I’m tuning in is because I figure if someone has convinced David Cross to be in a network sitcom AND that sitcom also stars Jeffrey Tambor (my favorite actor) and Jason Bateman (who I always liked, as far back as Silver Spoons) it is worth at least checking out. A few minutes into the pilot episode, I am amazed. It is new and different, and I love it.

SEASON TWO: After the unexpected thrill of AD winning the Emmy for Best Comedy for Season One, I find myself defending the show on the Television Without Pity message boards in Season Two. Lots of people are of the opinion that the show has lost its way, and that S2 is not as good as S1. It think they are NUTS, and say so, repeatedly and at length. (History has not been kind to these Season 2 doubters, who went on to be Season 3 killjoys and will no doubt hate the Netflix season regardless of its quality, while fondly recalling how much they loved the first 3 seasons.)

The reason I was on the TwoP message boards is that I read that the show’s cast and creators were frequently checking that message board to see what fans were saying. For some reason, I chose to post under the handle “middleman.” I do not remember why! I sort of wish I had just posted under my name, but there you have it.

I posted a lot. Long, passionate, overlong posts about how great the show was and what FOX needed to be doing to promote it better. Posts pointing out how many of the show’s supposed advocates in the media were inadvertently driving new viewers away by always referring to it as “too smart of TV” instead of emphasizing how funny it is. Posts advocating for things fans could be doing to help bolster the show: buying DVDs, buying AD merch from the FOX website, even going to Burger King and telling the people who work there “I’m here because of the TV show Arrested Development.”

NOTE: I actually did this. I, a man in my 30s, went into Burger King on several occasions and told them I was there buying a hamburger because they were a sponsor of the show Arrested Development.

I posted and posted and posted. I never stopped posting, because I cared more about this show than I had ever cared about a television show. And I’m someone who has been obsessive about my favorite television shows since I was a young child.

SEASON 3: A new character is introduced, a “surrogate” for the now-under-house-arrest George, Sr, who wears a camera in his hat and says whatever words he hears in his earpiece. The character was played by Bob Einstein and he was called LARRY MIDDLEMAN.

Now, of course, I realize that there are obvious reasons he is called that, reasons that have nothing to do with my TwoP handle. But I cannot ignore the reality that AD was well-known for having jokes that communicated on multiple levels. In fact, one of AD’s meta jokes occurred within minutes of Larry’s first appearance, when Lindsey says “do you think he got that— the two meanings?”

Maeby it’s all a coincidence and I’m just a delusional obssessive fan. I AM that, no doubt. But I cannot shake the possibility that it was, on some level, a shout out to one of their most vocal and obsessive fans in the middle of a cruelly abridged half-season loaded with subtle in-jokes and commentary on the show’s low-ratings and cult status.

I may never know the answer. But it feels good to at least be able to entertain the question.

Arrested Development returns on May 26th on Netflix. You probably already know that because this time somebody had the bright idea to actually, y’know, PROMOTE IT.*

*not interested in counter-arguments about how FOX gave it lots of chances. True, they allowed it to exist for 2-and-a-half seasons, and for that I am grateful. I am happy to talk in person about the specific ways that FOX killed the show by slowly suffocating it, and why they did it, but tumblr doesn’t allow for a back-and-forth so please don’t reblog this and simply say FOX gave it plenty of chances and “no one” watched it. Write your own post about how great FOX treated it and what a great guy Rupert Murdoch is!
